Types of Tile

Ceramic tile is primarily made of clay. There are nine different categories of ceramic tile. These categories are determined by how the tile is manufactured, its performance characteristics and special considerations. These categories are unglazed ceramic mosaic, glazed ceramic mosaic, unglazed quarry pave3r tile, glazed quarry tile, unglazed paver tile, glazed paver tile, glazed wall tile, decorative thin wall tile and special purpose tile. Glaze is the special coating that is placed over a tile. Glazes are available in matte, high-gloss and abrasive slip-resistant finishes.

Porcelain tile is primarily made of finely-ground sand. It is made using pressure and extremely high temperature, which results in material that has qualities similar to glazed ceramic tiles. It can have a glazed, an unglazed, a high-polished or a matte finish.
Natural Stone tile is usually made out of marble, granite or slate. They may be polished so that they have a shiny surface or honed, which provides a duller, less-slippery finish. Natural stone tile is not recommended for areas where grease or water will accumulate.
